A scarce early Dutch sea chart of the Western Approaches to the English Channel, engraved and published by Hendrick Doncker in Amsterdam in 1661. A double-page chart with outline colour and oriented with east at the top, depicts the coast of southern Ireland to the left, Pembrokeshire and Cornwall with the Isles of Scilly above, the Breton peninsula at the upper margin, and the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula as far as Cape Finisterre on the right-hand side. Rendered with Doncker’s characteristic network of rhumb lines, soundings, and twin compass roses, and crowned by an ornate allegorical cartouche, the map represents one of Doncker’s earliest Channel plates and a notably decorative and uncommon issue. by Doncker, Hendrick.
