Jacques-Nicolas Bellin’s influential 1765 chart of global magnetic variation and prevailing winds, compiled at the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine and dedicated to Étienne-François de Choiseul, then Minister of War and of the Navy and Colonel General of the elite Swiss and Grisons regiments serving the French crown. The map is richly embellished with cherubic wind heads, classical personifications of the dominant wind directions and monsoonal systems across the world’s most frequented seas, accompanied by magnetic declination lines and detailed explanatory text.
