A map sheet from the landmark series that enabled Saudi Arabia to identify and exploit its oil reserves. Between 1950 and 1963, under the sponsorship of the Saudi Ministry of Finance and National Economy and in close collaboration with geologists of the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco), the U.S. Geological Survey Mission to Saudi Arabia produced 42 bilingual (Arabic–English) maps, charting in unprecedented detail the geology and geography of the Kingdom. At a time when much of the region was unmapped, the work required extensive aerial photography, controlled mosaics, and systematic reconnaissance geology. Led by key figures including Glen F. Brown, the joint US–Saudi programme issued maps at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:2,000,000. Published by the USGS in the United States, these surveys provided the scientific foundation for the Kingdom’s hydrocarbon and mineral development. This sheet encompasses areas later identified as major hydrocarbon provinces, including Kidan Gas Field, Marzouk, Maghrub, Shutfah, Kahlah fields, and Bu Hasa & Bab fields (UAE) . Prepared by Richard A. Bramkamp and Leon F. Ramirez of the United States Geological Survey and the Arabian American Oil Company under the joint sponsorship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
