This exceptional Swedish Neoclassical console table is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The ebonized base features a central giltwood starburst carving, flanked by two full-bodied dolphins with flowing tails, gracefully leading to a mahogany apron. The antique marble top, framed in giltwood, is a striking addition to the piece. Height 118" Width 32.75 by 22" Deep
The console is crowned with a two-piece beveled mirror, supported by columnar giltwood sides and adorned with a finely gilded star-decorated top. The base culminates in a beautifully carved giltwood winged eagle, set against a crotch mahogany backdrop. This exquisite console exemplifies the finest Swedish craftsmanship from the early 19th century.
A true gem of Neoclassical design, this piece is a rare and important example of the Swedish period at its peak.
Bylanders was Sweden's most famous mirror maker during the Empire period. He supplied mirrors and consoles to many country houses and palaces in southern and western Sweden, including Skottorp, Sperlingsholm and Stjernsund. The Nordiska Museum in Stockholm, which is the principal museum of Swedish furniture, has several important mirrors and consoles by Bylander.
