The Denver painting was begun as a commission from the lithographer, Cephas Grier Childs, in 1829.Sully evidently did not complete the work for Childs, but returned to the composition and finished the first painting in 1837.
Craquelure; inpainting at the edges of the painting and along some of the contours of the figure, these restorations were done over at least two campaigns.
