Details:
Rusty Schweickart and Georgy Grechko autographed pair of commemorative Soviet postcards, both postmarked Moscow, October 25, 1990, accompanied by a vintage flyer from the Moscow Planetarium announcing a joint appearance of the two space pioneers.
This unique Cold War-era collectible celebrates a historic public appearance by two prominent astronauts from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain: Apollo 9 astronaut Russell “Rusty” Schweickart of the United States and Soviet cosmonaut Georgy Grechko, veteran of Soyuz 17, Soyuz 26, and Soyuz T-14. The two met at the Moscow Planetarium on October 25, 1990, for a public event commemorating peaceful international cooperation in space.
Included are two original USSR postal covers, each boldly signed by both Schweickart and Grechko. One features a full-color illustration of the Moscow Planetarium, while the other commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute of Communications. Both are postmarked on the day of the event and bear Soviet postage and themed cancellations.
Accompanying the signed covers is an original vintage xerox flyer promoting the meeting at the Planetarium. The flyer, printed entirely in Russian, provides a biographical summary of each astronaut and notes the event as a special presentation for the public. A rare surviving artifact that documents a moment of personal diplomacy between East and West through the shared legacy of human space exploration.
