PQM-102 First Production Flight Flown Cover & Typed Letter Signed by Earl L. Pearce – Drone Milestone
PQM-102 flight flown commemorative cover for the first production PQM, carried aboard USAF Aero Systems Division aircraft from and to Tyndall AFB, Florida, on June 25, 1975. Cover notes its purpose as the “First Flight of First Production PQM” and “First Target Presentation for F-15” and “AIM-7F.” Also included is a typed letter signed by Earl L. Pearce, Supervisor, PQM-102A Field Operations, dated July 8, 1975, on Sperry Flight Systems letterhead. The letter outlines the successful milestones of the PQM-102A conversion project under the PAVE DEUCE program and notes that the drone was never flown manned after conversion except for ferry purposes.
Fine condition.
The PQM-102 was an unmanned target drone adapted from the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger and served in weapons testing programs for air-to-air missile training and evaluation. It was part of the broader push in the 1970s to expand the use of unmanned aerial targets in Air Force weapons development and testing.
Earl L. Pearce supervised PQM-102A Field Operations for Sperry Flight Systems, a division of Sperry Rand Corporation, during the transition to fully unmanned drone operation at Tyndall AFB in the mid-1970s.
