The display features a period image of the Douglas World Cruiser aircraft alongside identification text naming the “Chicago” and its pilots, Lt. Lowell H. Smith and Leslie P. Arnold, with the relic fabric mounted below and labeled “Original Fabric.”

The Douglas World Cruiser “Chicago” was the flagship aircraft of the first successful round-the-world flight in 1924, departing Seattle, Washington on April 6 and returning September 28, 1924. Piloted by Lt. Lowell H. Smith and Leslie P. Arnold, the aircraft completed approximately 26,345 miles over 363 hours of flight time, marking a milestone achievement in early aviation history. The “Chicago” is now preserved in the collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
