Paul Tibbets and Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk autographed photograph and postcard set relating to the historic B-29 Enola Gay mission. The 10 x 8” black and white photograph is boldly signed by Tibbets in blue ink, inscribed “Paul Tibbets, Pilot / B-29 Enola Gay / 6 Aug. 1945,” depicting the aircraft on the ground with its distinctive tail markings. Accompanied by a 6 x 4” Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum postcard signed by Van Kirk in black ink, identified as navigator of the Enola Gay.

Paul W. Tibbets Jr. (1915–2007) served as the pilot and commander of the Enola Gay, the B-29 Superfortress that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk (1921–2014) was the navigator on that mission, playing a critical role in guiding the aircraft to its target. Together, they were central figures in one of the most consequential events of the 20th century.
