Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865) served as the 16th President of the United States and led the nation through the Civil War, preserving the Union and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. His assassination in April 1865 led to widespread mourning and the creation of numerous memorial images such as this example.
George Washington (1732–1799) was the first President of the United States and a central figure in the American Revolution. His image was frequently used in 19th-century commemorative and allegorical works to symbolize national unity and the enduring legacy of the Republic.
