18c netsuke GAMA SENNIN & TOAD

Description

Late18th to early 19th century stag horn netsuke of standing Gama Sennin holding a double gourd, wearing a leaf cape and skirt on top of his tattered robe and with his constant companion - a magic toad - on his shoulder. Wonderful quality strong early carving with slightly mad smile face, beautifully carved leaf patterns, eyes of both characters are inlaid with brown horn. Large and deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time, porous center on the top and bottom are plugged and carved as part of the netsuke by the carved. Front parts of his feet are reglued, good quality work. Beautiful warm patina, great feel of age to the piece. Decent height of 3.15 inches.
