18th century kokutan (ebony) netsuke of standing Hotei, his hand raised to the top of his head. Hotei was a historical Chinese monk allegedly living in Wuyue kingdom in the 10th century and known for his jolly nature and love of children, he is considered to be an incarnation of Buddha Maitreya - the Buddha of the Future, and is one of the 7 Gods of Good Luck. Great face, excellent depiction of the flow of his robe lines, beautiful patina with characteristic ebony luster. Large himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Height 1.88 inches.
