Fannie Meritt Farmer was born in 1857 (Boston) and died in 1915 at age 57.
Teacher at Boston Cooking School
The first edition was written in 1896. It was the textbook used to teach women cooking in a way that no matter your background the recipes could be successfully replicated.
She was integral in helping women with employment thru domestic service in late 19th-early 20th century when there were few work opportunities for women.
She wrote recipes in a teaching style-Refined them to be taught that hadn't been done before-
Explaining chemistry and what was happening on the cooktop-coming from teacher perspective.
She was among the few who were instrumental in standardizing measurements and temperatures which didn't exist back then. Without this a cup could be different amongst households and - what does a warm oven mean could vary and hence inconsistent outcomes!
