There has always been a fascination here with mortar and pestles whatever they are made of. Maybe it's the simplicity of the way they function to produce herbal mixtures or , in this case, medicinal compounds for an apothecary.
This particular piece is very solid, weighing over 5 lbs. It hails from an estate near New Orleans and is said to have come from an antique store that dated it from 1820. While we have no solid proof of that, we do know that there are other pieces that have been dated similarly.
We have left the patina alone as well as the sticker from the antique store on the bottom. There is no other makers mark.
The mortar is simple in design and the pestle is shaped on either end to be easy to grip.
Enjoy this set as a decorative addition to a shelf arrangement or on a table top.
The pestle is 8" long and the mortar is 4.25"h, 5"w at the top and 4"w at the bottom.
