Description
A rare late-Imperial Russian porcelain ensemble executed in the chinoiserie / famille-verte taste, produced by the Gardner Porcelain Factory during the final decades of the Russian Empire.
The set comprises one large cabinet plate, one medium plate, two small plates, one covered sugar bowl, and one small teapot. Each piece is decorated with finely-painted floral scrolls, stylized lotus blossoms, and emblematic scholar's objects within shaped medallions, framed by a gilt Greek-key border.
This aesthetic reflects the Russian aristocratic fascination with Chinese decorative arts during the late 19th century and demonstrates Gardner's technical and artistic dialogue with exported Qing porcelain styles. The pastel enamel palette and delicately rendered motifs are characteristic of Gardner's finest hand-painted productions during this period.
All pieces bear the red Gardner oval factory mark with the Imperial Romanov eagle, consistent with late-19th-century manufacture. Surfaces exhibit strong enamel retention, hand-applied gilding, and refined brushwork throughout. Minor age-appropriate enamel wear; teapot lid with a small chip. No structural cracks or restoration to the remaining pieces.
This is an unusually cohesive group for this pattern, strongly suited for collection display and scholarly documentation.
Composition
"• 1 Large Plate 14.25 in
"• 1 Medium Plate 9.25 in
"• 2 Small Plates 8 in
"• 1 Covered Sugar Bowl
"• 1 Small Teapot
The set is priced as its appraised value which reflects the fact that Gardner chinoiserie porcelain remains one of the most desirable areas of pre-Revolutionary Russian decorative art. While individual plates surface occasionally, intact multi-form ensembles in this pattern are scarce. The present grouping represents a curated, academically significant example of late-Imperial Russian Orientalist porcelain taste, suitable for connoisseur-level private or institutional collections. The appraisal is available upon request.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: The ensemble survives in overall very good condition for late-19th-century Gardner porcelain of this type. All plates retain intense enamel saturation and crisp linework, with only minor age-appropriate surface wear to the overglaze enamels and light rubbing to the gilt Greek-key borders. The glazes remain glossy and stable, and there are no structural cracks, hairlines, or restorations noted on any of the four plates.
The covered sugar bowl is well-preserved, with intact enamels, clean interior surfaces, and no chips to the lid or rim. The teapot shows normal handling wear consistent with age; its body is free of cracks and displays excellent enamel preservation, while the lid exhibits a single small chip at the inner rim, which does not affect display. The spout and handle remain secure and free of repairs. All bases show the expected minor kiln grit, firing specks, and shelves wear typical of authentic Gardner production from this period.
Overall, this is a remarkably cohesive and well-kept set with excellent color retention, strong gilding, and only minor, expected imperfections"”highly suitable for collection display and consistent with higher-tier examples of late-Imperial Gardner chinoiserie output.
