Born in Mexico in 1917, de Servin, painted in Modern, Cubist style and created his own variation of folk art style. A distinguished member of the group "Pintores Jovenes" (Young Painters), he became well known for his Cubist style. Jose Maria de Servin's murals are rich i color and show a high sense of the "Mexicanidad". He collaborated with Jose Orozco in painting the murals for the Legislative Palace of Guadalajara, Jalisco and murals by de Servin are also in Mexico City and Guadalajara. For fifteen years Jose Maria de Servin taught summer art courses at the University of Arizona. Jose Maria de Servin first exhibited his work as early as 1940. In 1957 he received the prestigious Merciful Jose Orozco Award. At the Madonna Festival Exhibition in Los Angeles, California, Jose Maria de Servin received first prize for the work "The Modonna and the Boy" (1956). In 1967 he was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Friends of Mexican Art of the Phoenix Art Museum. A tribute exhibition was held in 1984, the year after the artist's death, at the Regional Museum of Guadalajara.
