The pair, who"”having supposedly returned in a spaceship from the future upon the fall of the Berlin Wall"”refuse to disclose their real names, ages, or origins, make appearances at galleries, fairs, and other art world events, and like their precursors Gilbert & George, "don't just go and do a performance in a gallery and then stop being Eva & Adele afterwards." Shaved heads, full clownish makeup, and elaborately feminine costumes are trademarks of the duo's identical appearance. "We are an artwork," says Adele; "Wherever we are is a museum," reads their official website. Though biologically male, Eva had her gender legally changed so the two could marry as women. "I'm neither a man nor a woman," she says, however. "Neither is Adele. We've invented our own sex."
