NOTE: This embroidery is currently in a museum exhibition and cannot be shipped until December 2026.
Hannah Badger worked this c.1811 silk embroidery/ painting representing America, at the Atkinson Academy in Atkinson, New Hampshire.
America is represented as the Goddess of Liberty holding an olive branch in one hand (symbolizing peace) and a liberty cap and American flag in the other (symbolizing liberty). She is elegantly dressed and standing in a stitched pastoral setting with a painted sky. The charming reversed painted glass is early and very likely original as the maker later taught painting and needlework at the Atkinson Academy.
A handwritten note on the back states: Needlework and Painting/ by/ Hannah P. Badger, 1811. & 12/ Than Miss H. P. Cogswell/ Atkinson Academy. / New Hampshire
Note: Hannah Cogswell(1791-1869) was born in Atkinson, NH, and in 1814 married William Badger who became the Governor of NH. They had two children. Atkinson Academy is now an elementary school, housed in the original 1803 building.
