Fannie Meritt Farmer was born in 1857 (Boston) and died in 1915 at age 57.

The first edition was written in 1896. It was the textbook used to teach women cooking in a way that no matter your background the recipes could be successfully replicated.
She was integral in helping women with employment thru domestic service in late 19th-early 20th century when there were few work opportunities for women.
She wrote recipes in a teaching style-Refined them to be taught that hadn't been done before-
Explaining chemistry and what was happening on the cooktop-coming from teacher perspective.
She was among the few who were instrumental in standardizing measurements and temperatures which didn't exist back then. Without this a cup could be different amongst households and - moderate warm oven could vary.
This 1942 edition is the exact same size as 1896. Please note the Preface written by Fannie Farmer is carried over from original and considered a great writing.

In 1965 the cookbook was printed larger and the name was changed to Fannie Farmer's Cookbook which included new chapters for the time.

She edited the book through seven editions and millions of copies in the middle of the 20th century, more than its namesake, Fannie Merritt Farmer, who introduced The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book by Fannie Farmer in 1896.
The book had revolutionized American cooking, as Farmer preached the power of precise recipes, a kind of scientific approach to preparing family meals. She died in 1915 and the task of the editing was taken over by her sister, Cora Perkins of Boston.
After Cora Perkins died in 1929, Wilma Perkins became the editor of the cookbook, inheriting the task from her mother-in-law, but keeping the focus on Fannie Farmer.
"I've tried to be as anonymous as possible," she once told the Democrat and Chronicle. ""¦ We stress Aunt Fannie's contributions and name "¦. It's her name women trust."
Though the cover of the book continued to feature Fannie Farmer, under Wilma Perkins' leadership, the cookbook was revised and altered to reflect shifting attitudes toward food and dining.
