Description
A richly glazed majolica jardinière, featuring deeply modeled leaves, vines, and berries in high relief. The naturalistic motif wraps around the vessel, framed by a twisted vine rim and supported by tripod root-form feet.
A richly glazed majolica jardinière, modeled in the faux-bois taste with an entwined vine-form rim and root-form feet. The body has deeply molded leaves, berries, and blossoms in high relief"”an exuberant interpretation of nature inspired by both Japanese craftsmanship and the Western Aesthetic Movement.
The glaze palette of celadon greens, chestnut brown, and soft ochre has a subtle pearlized sheen that catches the light, contrasting beautifully with the turquoise interior. Heavier in body than typical English majolica, this example reflects the robust potting and saturated glazing of Japanese export ware made for Western markets at the turn of the century.
The base bears a red seal-style kanji mark, consistent with Meiji-era workshops such as Awaji or Sumida. A decorative and sculptural piece, equally striking in a conservatory, library, or garden room.
