Charles Millgate Yeman was born at Woodreen, London on 21 January 1882 and enlisted as Boy Class II on 6 April 1899. His first service afloat was Arethusa on 14 November of that same year he reached his majority on 14 November 1899. She was serving on the Pacific Station when the Boxer Rebellion began and was posted to the China Station in 1901 to reinforce British troops in the region.
Advanced Able Seaman the following year Yeman remained in service for some time, being advanced Petty Officer Class II in 1905 and Petty Officer Class I on 1 December 1909. He was still service in that rank on the outbreak of the Great War when he was service with the destroyer Fairy. This vessel started the war at the First of Forth but was attached to the Grand Fleet in October 1914, Yeman left her on 10 November 1915.
He was posted to the shore base Pembroke I but very quickly invalided due to severe ill-health. Yemen died just ten days after his discharge at Epping on 25 December, his wife Daisy received a pension, suggesting that his illness was service related
