The "Kent", an East Indiaman belonging to the British East India Company and bound for Bengal and China, caught fire in the Bay of Biscay during her maiden voyage.
On board were 641 persons, including 20 officers and 344 men of the 31st Regiment of Foot, together with 43 women, 66 children, 20 private passengers, and a crew of 148 (officers included).
By the prompt action of Captain Cook of the passing "Cambria", 547 lives were saved. .
