Description
This dramatic, oversized piece is an exceptional example of Primitive Treenware and serves as an authentic Tribal Spice Mortar (sometimes referenced as an Ukhali or similar deep-well grinder). Estimated to be mid 20th Century, its heavy, dark hardwood construction and pronounced drum form are deeply evocative of folk-art utility. The piece's unique and defining feature is the wrought iron strapping"”a technique used to reinforce the wood and prevent splitting from intense, repetitive grinding. This strapping adds a powerful, architectural quality and speaks to its demanding use. The deep, rich color is an organic patina, a testament to its age and the oils absorbed over a century of life.
With its commanding 10.5-inch diameter and deep, dark tones, this artifact provides an essential grounding element for any modern interior. It is perfect for bringing authentic weight and character to bright, minimalist, or Wabi-Sabi spaces.
Use it as a Custom Side Table: Its wide, stable diameter and 13-inch height make it a perfect, unexpected base for a small piece of custom furniture. Simply top it with a custom-cut 12 to 14-inch circular piece of glass, black marble, or salvaged wood to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind architectural end table ideal for flanking a sofa or serving as a grand bedside accent. Or make it a Statement Vessel: The deep, drum-like well makes it a superb container. Fill it with branches, sculptural dried florals (like the magnolias pictured), or rolled towels in a bathroom to introduce an unparalleled primitive texture.
