Description
A handsome and substantial 19th-century American stoneware crock, attributed to the workshop of David Parr, dating to approximately 1860–1875. This classic 3-gallon salt-glazed storage jar features a warm gray-tan body accented with lively hand-brushed cobalt decoration, a hallmark of mid-19th century American utilitarian pottery.
The upper body is adorned with bold cobalt flourishes forming a rhythmic band of scrolling brushwork beneath the rolled rim. The decoration is expressive and spontaneous, with the fluidity typical of hand-applied cobalt slip used by skilled pottery decorators of the period. Substantial lug handles on either side allowed the crock to be easily lifted when filled with provisions.
Stoneware of this type was produced for practical household use"”commonly for pickling, preserving, and dry storage"”yet today it is admired for its sculptural presence and folk-art character. The softly mottled salt glaze and iron flecking in the clay give the surface depth and a beautiful tactile quality developed through more than 150 years of age.
The form is tall and elegant for a storage vessel, making it an excellent decorative piece for interiors today"”particularly appealing in primitive, early American, farmhouse, or wabi-sabi inspired spaces. Large 19th-century crocks like this also make striking vessels for dried botanicals or as standalone sculptural objects.
