Antique early 19th century bouillotte lamp. Non-electrified - for wax candle use only. The fixture itself appears to be silver plate with no markings. Features two arms ending in candle cups. Fluted columnar base. Square center rod topped with round ring finial. Adjustable oval metal tole shade with original dark green outer surface - ivory/taupe painted interior.
Measures 12.25" wide x 8.5" deep x 3334.5" height (to top of center pole finial).
Bouillotte lamps were originally designed as a card game accessory. "Bouillotte" being the most popular card game throughout France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Said "lamps" were placed in the center of a a small pedestal table that sate 2-4 players. Shedding light on all player's dealt hands. The adjustable shade shielding their eyes from direct exposure to the harsh flames. Along with a shorter height that all to view (over the shade) their opponent's faces.
In very good antique condition with no issues of note. Some tarnish, pitting, and silver plate loss. Original shade exterior dark green paint finish displays the patina that only age can provide. Along with a range of subtle "dings" and surface scratches. The interior appears to have been repainted at some point in a historically correct ivory/taupe hue. NO dents or warping the the metal shade itself. Note: This fixture displays what appears to be a hole on its base back side. Along with a small circular opening on its interior. Thus it may at some time it may have been wired. However its construction, condition, and framework indicate the fixture itself was originally designed as a non-electrified candle holder. That said - post consulting a reputable lighting restorer - it could in most likelihood. be adapted and wired for electricity.
