Description
A highly desirable mid-19th century Pennsylvania blanket chest, dated “1843” on the lid, retaining an exceptional original green painted surface with polychrome decoration. The façade features three recessed panels, each centered with stylized floral motifs, framed by contrasting lighter painted borders. The central panel incorporates the original key escutcheon, while the overall composition reflects the strong Germanic folk tradition of southeastern Pennsylvania. The lift-top opens to a spacious interior fitted with a lidded till, supported by original iron strap hinges. The case rests on shaped bracket feet, and the surface exhibits a beautifully worn patina consistent with age. 23.5 in. H, 49 in. W, 24 in. D
Condition
Original painted surface with expected wear, including rubbing, paint loss, scattered surface abrasions, and age-related shrinkage. Interior shows typical wear from use. Structurally sound and retains strong visual presence.
