
Description
A hand-stitched needlework sampler executed in silk thread on linen ground, worked in rows with upper and lowercase alphabets, decorative bands, and stylized floral and figural motifs. The lower register features a central basket with flanking birds and flowering vines, above the stitched inscription “Charlotte Petit, 1824.” The composition and palette, including muted greens and browns, are consistent with early 19th century American schoolgirl samplers, likely Pennsylvania in origin. Presented in a later molded wood frame with mat. 29 in. H, 23 in. W

Fading to threads, toning and wear to linen ground, scattered losses and stitch degradation; laid down and framed under glass; not examined out of frame.
