BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, completed in fine stitches, top half with three and one-fourth alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, below featuring two verses from a hymn by English Anglican cleric and hymnwriter John Newton (1725-1807) with the title of "THE SINNER'S FRIEND", flanked by two motifs of flowers in urns, center featuring a large flower vine band, lower half with various motifs including grape clusters, birds, trees, and flower baskets, bottom center signed "Mary Ann Robinson Aged 10 years / Finished July 3rd / 1849", all encompassed by a flower or berry vine border. Housed under glass in a probably later frame having later silver-painted finish. Dated 1849. 12 1/2" x 16 1/2" sight, 13 5/8" x 17 5/8" OA.
Thread in very good to excellent visual condition with some toning / stains and some typical fugitive color, a small loss in top proper left corner in relation to hole, linen in mostly good condition with light to moderate toning, some scattered stains, and a few small holes, frame with wear and other imperfections including chips and losses to molding, having later silver paint. Not examined out of frame.
