Santa Barbara landscape and still life painter Meredith Brooks Abbott briefly studied art at Scripps College before returning home to care for her ailing father. She continued her artistic studies working with artists Douglass Parshall, Richard S. Meryman and Clarence Hinkle. Returning to school, she graduated from the Art Center School of Design.
Abbott moved to New York in 1962 and worked in advertising as an illustrator while also continuing her art studies in night classes at the Arts Students League. She returned to California in 1970, and worked as an illustrator in San Francisco while also beginning to exhibit her own work. During this period, the Marin County environs served as frequent subjects for the artist. Abbott married Duncan Abbott in 1974, and the couple settled on his Carpinteria avocado and lemon ranch.
For over five decades, Abbott has worked in the Santa Barbara area creating elaborate and stunning floral compositions and site-specific landscapes, like the present selection of works. She is a founding member of the OAK Group and holds memberships in the Santa Barbara Art Association and the California Art Club.
