Description
Overview
A beautiful, high-impact Scottish Art Deco era agate-set brooch in a crisp hexagonal geometric design, stamped “STERLING SILVER” to the reverse. The look is unmistakably “Scottish pebble jewellery” in spirit—bold native-stone colour, strong symmetry, and a confident silver mount—finished with a glowing amber-toned faceted centre stone that catches light superbly.
Maker / Attribution
Unidentified maker. However, the design is very much in the manner of Ward Brothers of Branston Street, Birmingham—recorded as makers of items including brooches and related smallwares, with their name appearing in Birmingham maker references. Please note: this piece is stamped “STERLING SILVER” but does not show a complete UK hallmark group (town/date/maker), therefore we describe the maker as attributed by style, not definitively “by”.
Design & Stones
The border is set with curved half-moon cabochon agates in rich, natural tones—greens and maroons—creating a refined, high-end palette that reads beautifully against silver. The centre features a large amber-toned faceted stone, prong set to maximize brilliance and depth; it presents in the Cairngorm-style colour tradition (warm honey-to-burnt amber tones). Cairngorm stones in Scottish jewellery are traditionally associated with quartz/citrine colour ranges, which helped define the look collectors love.
Period & Style
Circa early 20th century, Art Deco era. The clean geometry and symmetrical stone layout deliver that classic Deco “architectural” feel—small in size, but with the visual authority of a miniature jewel sculpture.
Metal & Marks
Stamped “STERLING SILVER” to the reverse (see photos). The brooch is fitted with a traditional pin and clasp and is fully wearable.
Provenance
From a private Middle Shires collection, acquired via a notable Malvern-based auction house, and subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD—a desirable chain for collectors who value specialist sourcing and careful presentation.
