Description
Subject & Medium
This is an original c.1720 copper engraving of Chatsworth House, Derbyshire – the great seat of the Dukes of Devonshire – finely printed and later hand-coloured. Over 300 years old, it is a genuine early 18th-century impression, not a modern reproduction.
The view shows the long “180 foot” front of Chatsworth set above its strictly ordered formal gardens. Below the house stretch elegant parterres, straight tree-lined avenues, water features and an intricate maze, all radiating out from the palace and expressing the taste, wealth and power of one of Britain’s most important aristocratic families. In the decorative cartouche at the foot of the image, the Cavendish arms and the motto “CAVENDO TUTUS” (“safe by being cautious”) proudly proclaim the identity of the owners
Composition & Technique
The composition is after Leonard Knyff (1650–1721), the Dutch-born artist who became the leading specialist in panoramic views of English country houses. Working with engravers such as Johannes Kip, Knyff helped to define the classic image of the great estates that dominated late Stuart and early Georgian society. At Chatsworth, the Cavendish family created one of the grandest houses in the kingdom, filled with paintings, sculpture and tapestries, and surrounded by model gardens inspired by the latest continental fashions. This print captures that earlier, formal phase of the landscape, before Capability Brown swept much of it away in the later 18th century
The plate was almost certainly issued by the Dutch publisher Pieter van der Aa in Leiden, as a book illustration in one of his large volumes on foreign lands. The faint central vertical fold, still visible, is a reminder of its original life sewn into a bound volume . The image is printed from a copper plate with crisp engraved lines and rich cross-hatching, then later enriched with hand-applied watercolour which gently picks out the architecture and garden details without overwhelming the fine line work.
Under magnification you can see the hallmarks of true period intaglio printing: clean burin lines in the sky, dense cross-hatching in the shaded areas, and neat rhythmic strokes to suggest trees, hedges and crops. The paper shows gentle age toning consistent with an early 18th-century sheet, and there is a clear plate mark around the image. Overall it presents very well for its age and makes a handsome, atmospheric display piece.
Dimensions Framed 26.5 cm high × 29.5 cm wide x depth 2 cm
Framing
The engraving is presented in a late 20th-century gilt frame with a later fitted mount and is glazed for protection. The frame is not contemporary with the print but suits it well and allows it to be hung and enjoyed immediately. As with all framed works, there may be some minor surface marks to the frame consistent with age and handling, but it displays very nicely.
Why You’ll Love It
An authentic c.1720 view of one of England’s greatest houses, closely associated with the powerful Cavendish family and the Dukes of Devonshire.
A beautifully detailed copper engraving with soft later hand-colour – decorative on the wall, but still full of fine architectural and garden detail for close inspection.
A record of a formal Baroque garden layout at Chatsworth that no longer exists, giving you a real talking point for anyone interested in garden history and the evolution of great estates.
Comes with private collection provenance, curation by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD, late 20th-century gilt frame with mount and glazing, and museum exhibition history – exactly the kind of backstory that appeals to serious collectors as well as decorators.
Whether you are building a collection of country house views or simply want a striking, genuinely old artwork for your interior, this print has both charm and substance .
Most surviving impressions of this plate are in plain black-and-white; this example has attractive early hand-colour, greatly enhancing its decorative appeal and making it a scarcer, more desirable sheet for collectors and decorators alike.”
Provenance & Exhibition
The engraving comes from a distinguished private collection, curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. It has been exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum in the :“Prospects of Power: Historic Views of Britain’s Great Estates”, Autumn 2025
This gives the work both private-collection provenance and the added interest of museum exhibition history – reassuring for collectors and a great talking point for display.

Collecting Tradition
Engravings of grand country houses and gardens like this were highly prized in the 18th and 19th centuries, when connoisseurs assembled large libraries of copperplate prints recording architecture and landscape design. Great collections formed by figures such as Sir Hans Sloane, Clayton Mordaunt Cracherode and Horace Walpole helped to shape the major print rooms of today.
Many of those historic collections were later dispersed at auction or donated to public institutions, so works of this type are now found in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. You can find similar engraved views of Chatsworth and other English country estates in the British Museum’s collection today, as well as in important private collections worldwide .
