Description
A super-RARE US WWII issue General Motors Guide Lamp "three-hole" Liberator .45 ACP Single Shot Pistol in very good condition with a bright smooth bore. The action appears to function properly with some wear to the cosmetic exterior. Intact zinc plunger! The pistol includes an original grip floor plate and the wooden ejection rod. NOT a reworked modern replica! The FP-45 Liberator was a crude, single-shot .45 ACP pistol developed by the United States during World War II as a psychological and guerrilla warfare tool rather than a conventional battlefield weapon. Designed in 1942 by the Guide Lamp Division under direction from the Office of Strategic Services, the pistol was intended to be cheaply mass-produced and dropped behind enemy lines for resistance fighters in occupied Europe and Asia. Made largely from stamped sheet metal, it could fire only one round before requiring manual reloading, and it came with a small supply of ammunition and a wooden dowel for ejecting spent cartridges. Designed for close-range use, kill the enemy...and take HIS weapon! About one million Liberators were manufactured in just a few months at extremely low cost, but relatively few were actually distributed in combat operations because Allied leaders questioned their practical effectiveness and feared German reprisals against civilians found possessing them. Most were dumped at sea...VERY few remain.
