Description
Here we have a Mexican Tonala Style Folk Art Pitcher in polychrome coloring. The ceramic production in Tonal is known as the authentic mestizo ceramic and is symbolic of Mexico’s identity. Made of burnished clay or scented clay, these artistic objects are created for ordinary and decorative use. The missionaries introduced lacquer that began to be used along with the original burnishing method. Tonal ceramics became an important part of the decoration of wealthy houses in Spain for color and design. They are considered luxury items bought from the Americas. It is signed P.J. Mexico and dates 1960 to 1970. It has a small chip at the base, but it does not take away from its overall appeal.
