20th Century Fox, 1962; light blue covers, marked "Final / Confidential / For Planning Purposes Only," dated "March 29, 1962," screenplay by Nunnally Johnson, 143 pages, the first page only displays extensive notes penciled in Marilyn's hand, reading in part "About Ellen / ?she has been living in the jungle for the last five / years / ?but Ellen like a person who has come / close to death has a new certain / vigor / we must break the chains that bind her still / but how?"; other pages have her character's name "Ellen" circled throughout in orange wax pencil, additionally there are a number of penciled notes throughout in Paula Strasberg's hand; the two evidently went over this early version of the script together before filming started in April, analyzing how the star would approach this role; please note the covers are tattered on the edges, but interior pages are all still sturdy and intact.
As Marilyn fans know, this was the star's last ever film ? one she was unable to complete due to her untimely death. The remaining footage, which was cobbled together decades later, shows us a mature Marilyn, looking stunning and speaking in her normal, adult woman voice ? not her signature breathy one of the 1950s. Her character of "Ellen" was refreshingly not naive or dim, so it's sad we never got to see this confident and seasoned version of Marilyn.
