Details:
Gus Grissom owned “Preliminary Memorandum for Those Concerned – Subject: MA-6 Pilot’s Debriefing” NASA document relating to the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission flown by John Glenn in February 1962. The multi-page memorandum contains a detailed outline of astronaut post-flight debriefing procedures and references mission phases including prelaunch, powered flight, zero-G operations, reentry, landing, and recovery, along with observational discussions attributed to Glenn following America’s first orbital spaceflight mission. The document is signed in print by R. B. Voas and remains housed within a CAG encapsulation identified as originating “From the Gus Grissom Estate.”
The encapsulation has partially separated and loosened along several outer edges, though the document itself remains intact and displayable within the holder.
Virgil “Gus” Grissom (1926–1967) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and one of the most important figures in early American space exploration. He became the second American in space aboard Mercury-Redstone 4 in 1961 and later commanded Gemini 3, the first crewed Gemini mission. Grissom was selected to command Apollo 1 before tragically perishing alongside Ed White and Roger Chaffee during the 1967 launch pad fire at Cape Kennedy. Material originating directly from the Gus Grissom estate, particularly internal NASA mission documentation from the Mercury era, remains highly sought after by collectors of early space exploration history.
