Details:

Apollo 11 space-flown photographic film fragment that journeyed to the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission. The original film fragment, measuring approximately 0.375 x 0.25 inches, was flown aboard the Command Module Columbia and was also placed on the Lunar Module Eagle, accompanying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during their descent to the lunar surface at Tranquility Base.

The fragment is mounted to an 8.5 x 11 inch explanatory display sheet titled “Apollo 11 Film – A Small Part of History.” The mounted presentation details the film’s complete journey: launch from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969; lunar orbit on July 19; placement aboard Eagle on July 20; return to Columbia on July 21; and splashdown on July 24, 1969. The display is certified by Richard W. Underwood, NASA Supervisory Aerospace Technologist at the Lyndon B. Johnson Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas, whose printed name and signature appear on the sheet. The presentation also bears facsimile signatures of Neil Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., and Michael Collins as part of the original commemorative format.

Columbia (CM-107) was the sole spacecraft from Apollo 11 to return safely to Earth, making artifacts associated with it especially desirable. Genuine space-flown film fragments from Apollo 11 represent some of the most intimate surviving material evidence of humanity’s first journey to the Moon. This example offers a rare opportunity to acquire a tangible, documented component of that mission—quite literally, a small part of history.
