Unissued commemorative space certificate honoring the 20th anniversary of the dawn of the space age, boldly signed by Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina, mother of Yuri Gagarin, and Maria Nikolaevna Balanina-Koroleva, mother of Sergey Korolev, the USSR’s chief rocket designer.

This remarkable and rare document was prepared for distribution at Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 4, 1977, in celebration of 20 years since the launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite and the event that launched the Space Age. The certificate was meant to recognize the many unnamed contributors to the Soviet space effort with a heartfelt patriotic message printed in Russian, thanking the recipient for their participation in “the bold assault on space.”

At bottom, the citation is signed by two of the most historically symbolic figures of Soviet cosmonautics:

• Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina, mother of Yuri Gagarin, the first human in space,
• Maria Nikolaevna Balanina-Koroleva, mother of Sergey Korolev, the visionary engineer behind the USSR’s early space successes.

Also signed by Nina Timofeyevna Karpushina-Koroleva, daughter-in-law of Korolev, in tribute. Though the name field is unfilled, the document bears full Baikonur cancellation dated 4 October 1977, marking the occasion.
