Raja Ram Mohan Roy autographed 2-page handwritten letter (ALS) “Rammohun Roy,” dated June 30th, 1832, written from “48 Bedford Sq.” on a single folded sheet with the integral address panel remaining affixed at the corner to the reverse. The letter is addressed to “Robert Aspland Esq.” and discusses Roy’s gratitude for Aspland’s advocacy relating to Indian affairs and legislative matters before the India Board. Roy writes extensively regarding proposals made by judges in Calcutta concerning legislative branches and expresses appreciation for Aspland’s “most judicious & able remarks on behalf of India.” He also references concern for Aspland’s health, noting regret that his condition had impeded his “valuable public labours,” while conveying hopes to visit him briefly if permitted by his physicians. The letter closes with warm personal regards and remains a remarkable example of Roy’s correspondence during his influential period in England.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy (1772–1833) was one of the most important intellectual and social reform figures in modern Indian history and is widely regarded as the “Father of the Bengal Renaissance.” A pioneering advocate for educational reform, women’s rights, religious tolerance, and the abolition of sati, Roy helped shape early modern Indian political and social thought during the British colonial period. He founded the Brahmo Sabha, which later evolved into the Brahmo Samaj reform movement, and became an influential voice bridging Indian and British intellectual circles. Authentic handwritten letters by Roy are exceptionally scarce and highly desirable, particularly those touching upon Indian governance and reform during his final years in England.
