Benjamin O. Davis Jr. (1912–2002) was a pioneering United States Air Force officer and one of the most important figures in American military aviation history. A graduate of West Point, Davis became the commander of the famed Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, leading the 332nd Fighter Group in combat missions over Europe. His distinguished military career helped break racial barriers within the U.S. Armed Forces and paved the way toward the desegregation of the American military. Davis ultimately became the first African American general in the United States Air Force and was later advanced to the rank of four-star general by President Bill Clinton in 1998.
