Harrison H. Schmitt (born 1935) was the lunar module pilot of Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission to land on the Moon in December 1972. A geologist by training, Schmitt remains the only professional scientist and geologist to have walked on the lunar surface, where he conducted extensive geological exploration in the Taurus–Littrow Valley alongside commander Eugene Cernan. Prior to his NASA career, Schmitt worked with the U.S. Geological Survey and later served as a United States Senator from New Mexico. Apollo-related autographed covers signed by astronauts associated with both the Moon landings and lunar science remain highly collectible artifacts from the golden age of human space exploration.
