STS-2 launched on November 12, 1981, with astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly aboard Columbia. The mission marked several important milestones for NASA, including the first time a crewed spacecraft was reflown in orbit. Columbia completed 37 orbits during its mission before landing safely at Edwards Air Force Base. Joe Engle, a former X-15 test pilot, was one of NASA’s most accomplished aviators, while Richard Truly later became the eighth Administrator of NASA. Early Space Shuttle recovery and support material tied directly to Columbia’s initial flights remains highly collectible due to the historical significance of the Shuttle program’s formative missions.
