STS-41G launched aboard Space Shuttle Challenger on October 5, 1984, and was one of the most historically significant flights of the early Shuttle era. The mission marked the first time two women flew together in space, with astronauts Sally Ride and Kathryn Sullivan serving on the same crew. During the mission, Sullivan became the first American woman to perform a spacewalk. The flight also included Marc Garneau, the first Canadian astronaut in space, and Paul Scully-Power, the first Australian-born astronaut. Over the course of the eight-day mission, the crew deployed the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite and conducted numerous scientific and Earth observation experiments, further expanding the international and scientific scope of the Space Shuttle program.
