Description
A Chinese export watercolor on rice paper depicting three traveling figures in procession, probably dating to the late 18th or 19th century. The composition features two male travelers carrying personal belongings suspended from shoulder poles accompanied by a female figure holding a woven basket. Executed with delicate brushwork and transparent pigments, the work reflects the characteristic style of Chinese export paintings produced for the Western market.
The figures are shown in traditional attire with carefully rendered costume details and accessories, capturing scenes of daily life and travel. Paintings of this type were commonly produced in Canton (Guangzhou) for foreign merchants and collectors during the Qing Dynasty. The textured surface and luminous coloration are typical of export “rice paper” paintings of the period.
Measure 13 1/2"in H x 15"in W not framed
Overall fair condition consistent with age and the delicate nature of rice paper. The sheet shows significant edge wear and losses, creasing, toning, scattered foxing, and areas of staining throughout. Multiple tears and small losses visible along the perimeter and corners. Minor surface abrasions and pigment fading present. Reverse with visible discoloration and image show-through. Despite condition issues, the painting retains strong visual appeal and display quality.
