Description
A Chinese export watercolor on rice paper depicting a judicial punishment or torture scene from the Qing Dynasty, likely dating to the late 18th or 19th century. The composition portrays a bound prisoner secured to a wooden restraint while an attendant tightens a pole across the figure’s neck and shoulders. Punishment implements, including rods and shackles, are arranged nearby, reinforcing the documentary nature of the image.
Rendered in delicate watercolor with finely controlled linework, the scene belongs to a series of export paintings illustrating Chinese legal punishments and penal practices for Western audiences. The sparse background, emphasis on costume detail, and isolated figural grouping are characteristic of Canton export paintings produced for the European market.
Measure 13 1/2"in H x 17 3/4"in W not framed
Overall fair condition consistent with age and the fragile nature of rice paper. Significant toning and discoloration throughout, with scattered foxing, creases, abrasions, and handling wear. Multiple edge tears, small losses, and repaired areas visible along the margins and corners. Surface grime and pigment fading present, especially in darker passages and facial details. Reverse exhibits staining, discoloration, and image bleed-through. Despite condition issues, the work remains visually compelling and historically evocative.
