The work was photographed in Xilinhot, when the chill of early spring had not yet faded. Two black horses lie quietly by the earthen wall of a herdsman's courtyard, their heads leaning against each other, as if whispering. The mottled wall is like a poetic scroll of time, and their figures are the gentlest annotation. In one corner of the vast grassland, this privacy and tenderness belonging only to living beings is fixed by the camera as an unfinished short poem, telling of the quiet power of nature and life.
Yan Shuzhen is a member of the China Photographers Association, a council member of the Inner Mongolia Photographers Association, and Vice Chair of the Baotou Photographers Association. In 2015, she was selected for the Sony China Young Photographers Development Program. In 2017, her art single photograph Dancer and the photo series Dreaming with Horses were selected for the 26th National Photographic Art Exhibition. In 2018, she won the 5th Xu Xiaobing Cup China Documentary Photography Award. In 2019, she received the Photography Creation Award of the 12th Sarina Award of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In September 2021, the joint exhibition The Grassland Is Near, the Sound of Hooves Is Far won the DIPE International Photography Festival Chairmen's Alliance Award at the 9th Dali International Photography Exhibition.
