Newlyweds was photographed in the spring of 1999 at a rural wedding in Fengxiang, Shaanxi. In the image, the bride and groom sit side by side on the bed: the groom smokes with a casual air, while the bride appears slightly uncertain and restrained. Through a restrained observation, the work reveals the subtle psychological reality of the figures beneath the ceremony, while also reflecting the changing social attitudes and marriage age in rural Guanzhong in the late 1990s.
Qin Ling has devoted more than forty years to documenting Chinese society through a humane and gentle photographic approach, with particular distinction in works on Xi'an and the cultural and ecological transformations of rural Guanzhong. His photography records street life and the changing relationship between city and countryside, and he has published multiple books. He received the Outstanding Photographer Award at the 25th Pingyao International Photography Festival in 2025 and has twice won Shaanxi's highest photography award. His works have been exhibited in France, Germany, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Macao, and are held in the collection of the National Museum of Cuba as well as several museums and art institutions in China.
