Ink Shadow compresses the mountain's contour into a calligraphic black-and-white structure. Two superimposed profiles read like brush traces: a lighter "wash" rises above, while a denser "ink" settles below, creating spatial progression from the ethereal to the weighty. A small cluster of trees at the base functions like a signature seal, offering scale and breath against the monumental form. Rather than depicting landscape as topography, the work approaches a "ink-painting" logic through photography-where negative space carries atmosphere, black fields hold gravity, and tonal layering suggests accumulated time.
Duan Yueheng (b. 1951, China) graduated in photojournalism from Renmin University of China. He is Sigma China's Chief Imaging Ambassador, a Panasonic Global Imaging Ambassador, an Honorary Mentor of Leica Akademie China, President of the Global Chinese Photographers Federation, and Chairman of the IPF International Photographers Federation Committee. His works have received multiple Benny Awards (Premier Print Awards) in the United States,as well as the Gold Prize of a UNESCO China photography competition, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto International Photography Festival, and a Canadian government award recognizing outstanding contributions to China-Canada cultural exchange through photographic art. His solo and group exhibitions have been presented in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taipei, Toronto, New York, Basel, and Miami.
Renowned for black-and-white photography, Duan is noted for nuanced tonal control that renders both texture and emotion. His long-term practice centers on nature and animals-from landscapes to living creatures-continuously turning inward through observation. The "Horse" series further deepens his sustained inquiry into the relationship between sentient life and the natural world.
