Description
Medium: Wet plate collodion on glass
Edition: Unique original
Framing: Wenge floating frame
Medicinal Objects: Seahorse is one of the representative works from Luo Bin's long-term ongoing subject. Using the wet plate collodion process, the artist photographs the traditional medicinal material "seahorse," transforming an object rooted in everyday knowledge and herbal practice into an image charged with specimen-like presence and ritual feeling. Isolated at the center of the composition, the slender form appears austere, enigmatic, and fragile within the silvery-grey tonality and material texture unique to wet plate photography, giving the work layered meanings of scientific observation, historical memory, and aesthetic contemplation.
Luo Bin is head of the photography program at the School of Art and Design, Xi'an University of Technology, and a council member of the Shaanxi Photographers Association. His works have been exhibited at Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, OCAT Xi'an, Xi'an Art Museum, and various photography festivals in China. He received support from the 2015 National Art Fund for Young Artists.
Exhibitions & Presentation:
The work has been shown at the Pingyao International Photography Festival and the 11th Shaanxi Photography Exhibition (2011); the Three Shadows Photography Award and the 2012 International University Photography Exhibition (2012); the Dali International Photography Festival and China Photography and Technological Imaging Exhibition (2013); the Jinan International Photography Biennale (2014); Illusory Images, Real Forms at Xi'an Art Museum (2015); Still Life at OCAT Xi'an and the 2nd Yangtze International Image Biennale (2017); an exhibition at Galerie Bouscayrol, France (2018); the Lishui Photography Festival, the East Asia Cultural City International Photography Art Festival in Incheon, and Illuminating the Future at the Ningbo Art Center of the China Photographers Association (2019); the Xishuangbanna International Image Exhibition (2023); and Chinese Landscape, Session VI (2025).
