Liu's Manor was photographed at Liu's Manor in Anren Town, Dayi County, Sichuan. The image presents a weathered historical propaganda mural. By placing revolutionary visual symbols, a decaying wall surface, and the erosion of time within a single panoramic composition, the work transforms what was once a politically functional image into a site of historical memory, temporal residue, and visual ideology.
The mural belongs to the typical political propaganda imagery of the 1960s and once carried a clear narrative function of its era. As time passed, the wall surface deteriorated, the colors faded, and the image shifted from "propaganda" to "relic." With a calm and direct approach, He Chongyue records this scene so that the work speaks not only of a specific site, but also of how collective memory is preserved, dissolved, and re-seen.
He Chongyue was born in Beijing in 1960. He began photographing and exhibiting his work in 1984, and now lives and works in Beijing. His solo exhibitions include Family Planning, Where Is Population Aging Heading ?, and Outside the Ring, and his work has been shown in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Atlanta, Valencia, and at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Japan. His practice has consistently focused on the relationship between social structure, historical traces, and lived space, giving him a distinct position within contemporary Chinese photography.
