Photographed on October 1, 1994, at a hair salon in Xiangya Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing, Hutong Scene captures women having their hair permed by the roadside as they watch passersby hurrying along the street. With a light yet perceptive eye, the work records a fleeting moment of everyday life in old Beijing's hutongs, revealing both the warmth of street life and the distinct atmosphere of its time.
Wang Wenyang began working as a professional photographer in 1981. He is currently Vice Chairman of the China Artistic Photography Society, and formerly served as Director of the Photography Department of China Intellectual Property News and as a senior journalist. He was named one of the First National Top Ten Young Photographers, received the title of one of the Third National Top Ten Portrait Photographers, won the 4th China Photography Golden Statue Award, and was honored by the China Photographers Association as an "Outstanding Contributing Photographer," as well as by the China Artistic Photography Society with the "Golden Deer Honor Award." In the exhibition Original Aspiration: Retrospective Exhibition of the National Top Ten Young Photographers (1992) held in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Reform and Opening-up, his works were issued in limited certified editions by the Image Copyright Society of China and were exhibited and collected by the National Art Museum of China.
